![]() Question 119 Scott, I'm a frustrated NG golfer looking for some help. I've enjoyed your website, and have a few questions. I'm right handed, and my left hand seems to cause a lot of problems. I can do drills with my right hand and hit the ball dead straight, but when I place my left hand on the club, all hell breaks loose. SH: The grip is the problem. You have not found the correct anatomical position for your left hand. Sometimes I push it (woods, long irons). Sometimes I pull it or hook it (short irons). SH: This has the earmarks of body rotation and a separation of the left arm away from the body as seen in the NG literature. What can I do to decrease the influence of my left hand. SH: Make sure you only have a 15 degree angle of the last 3 knuckles of your left hand and place it on your heartline. Allow the left arm to straighten at impact by setting the bottom of the arc. Doing this with the left arm only, will show you how to position the left hand to only square the club not close it. My second question is about my right arm. I have a habit of supinating my arm on impact. SH: A supination is moving you right hand from left to right. Follow the release on the video practice with the heavy club to promote the release of the hand.. The rotation of the Ideal Mechanical Advantage golf swing is a stone skipping motion with no pronation as in traditional. That was one reason for getting away from a traditional swing. This movement produced such a strong slice. SH: As well it should. That motion is one for the traditional short game. I don't slice the ball, but I push it a lot, especially with long irons and woods. Is this problem related to the left hand problem above? Please help, SH: Most likely the left arm motion through impact and upper body rotation. With a push the face and path is the same so you are swinging the club to the right of your target. When you play golf, path and face can be programmed through club head blur and visualization.
