Question 19

A Lever Power Question for Jack

From Randy:

I am hitting 60 to 70 percent of the shots well using Jack's "Lever Swing" after 2 weeks...Is this progress at the expected level?   Distance is so,so.   Maybe a bit more than my regular swing. With the trainer on I hit the 7 about 10 to 15 yards less than my usual distance but I'm trying to groove the unusual motion.   All change is difficult isn't it?

Dear Randy,

Your progress is right on track!   You will be 10 to 15 yards shorter with the trainer.   The trainer is very restrictive and forces the correct sensations.   When you take the trainer off, the wrist will bend about 10 to 15 degrees at the top of the backstroke.   The wrist will not be as straight as with the trainer on.  This small bending is acceptable and produces no problem for squaring the clubface at impact.   The small wrist bend at the top allows for a smoother start of the downstroke and an unrestricted rotation of the hands through impact.   The unrestricted rotation of the hands through impact is one of the places where clubhead speed is produced.  To get maximum clubhead speed, the smooth motion of moving the hands away from the shoulder backward and downward at the start of the downstroke is imperative!

Change is not only difficult, the subconsicous does everything it can not to change.   It is imperative that you follow the practice routines and use the ball placement/stroke trainer.   You have to force the subconscious to change.   Once your subconscious accepts Lever-Power, it will not want to change it either.
