Question 29

Scott,

How do I get more distance?

Thanks, Dan

Dear Dan,

The only way you get more distance is by increasing club head speed while maintaining a centered hit. You achieve this by:

  • No. 1 Strengthening your golf swing muscles.
  • No. 2 Learning the ideal mechanical golf swing which instructs you in how to release your hands properly into the golf ball, along with the correct movement of the down swing and the correct impact position.
Only by learning and repeating the correct motion will you achieve improvement. Hitting balls and processing will only improve the subconscious programs that you all ready have. This is why the Momentus Swing Trainer is so valuable.

But do not neglect the impact backward drills. They are exactly what you want to have happen in the full swing.

Drills for distance

Gary Player once said to roll up a newspaper with one hand to add 20 yards to your shots. This is one way to strengthen the forearm muscles. If you do wrist rolls with weights do not neglect both sides of the forearm and create muscular imbalance which can cause some major difficulties. Moe Norman does a thousand deltoid lifts a day to keep his shoulder strong.

Shoulders are important because they are not true joints, therefore the support muscles need to be strong enough to with stand incredible amounts of speed. Triceps pull downs are advantageous for the start of the down swing and movement to the ball.

I prefer swinging a heavy golf club weighing a thousand grams doing 20 to 25 repetitions back and through in a continuous motion. This strengthens, lengthens, and works the exact muscles for your golf swing. Do three to six sets with an overall minimum of 60 repetitions. I do a hundred repetitions.

Remember, behavioral scientists and bio-physicians say 60 repetitions for 21 days forms a habit.
