Question 32

Dear Scott,

You've said your irons have four-way roll. What does that mean, and why should I care?

Thanks,
Howard

Dear Howard,

I forgot to cover that when I answered the question on design features. Four- way roll refers to the camber of the sole. In other words, the sole is curved from heel to toe, and also from front to back.

This feature allows the smallest point of contact betweeen the head and the ground. This is extremely significant when you have side hill lies, balls in divots, hardpan, sand or rough. This sole does not dig into the grass or sand like a flat bottomed club would. Also because you are going to be playing from uneven lies the radius sole will minimize your lie angle changes, and in turn pushed or pulled shots. This feature also allows the club to be dynamically balanced for straight line motion.
