Question 49

Scott - Why do most tour pros wear copper bracelets?

Thank you, Linda

Dear Linda,

There are several reasons. According to Life Extension (Warner Books) SOD (superoxide dismutase) is a very important natural intracellular enzyme in our bodies which destroys damaging superoxide free radicals. These superoxide radicals play an important role in the damage to joint membranes and lubrication fluids that occurs in rheumatoid arthritis. Recently we've discovered that complexes of copper and aspirin have SOD properties. So one reason is the old wives' tale about wearing a copper bracelet for arthritis is true.

Tour players tend to copy each other - take a look at their attire. So top players start trends, especially in the case of copper bracelets where there is probably truth to claims for their benefits. Finally, there is the superstition factor, or maybe it's I want every legal edge I can get. I don't think any baseball player really thinks kissing his bat is going to make the ball go farther, but in sports as competitive as baseball or golf if something gives you a mental edge you want it.

In my own case, I wear a copper bracelet and believe it helps me physically which is reason enough for wearing it.
