Question 5

Q: Recently you answered a question about oversized club heads, and essentially said they're not effective, or only psychologically. My question is in a similar vein. How much more distance will I get with graphite shafts?

A: You may be able to swing a lighter shaft a bit faster, but unless the shaft is longer, don't expect more than a yard or two in additional distance. Again, in nature "nothing is for nothing." Longer shafts take more strength to swing because the moment of inertia increases with the shaft length squared.

Between graphite and steel, the only benefit of graphite is less vibration. Steel shafts give better control because they resist torque more.
