Question 69

Dear Scotty,

I have a marketing suggestion for you. Advertise that you can teach someone how to swing EXACTLY like Moe Norman in three months. This should help your Scigolf sales and in less than a year you should have an army of Moe Norman's running around in your backyard. Your a GENIUS!! See ya!

Wouldn't wanna be ya!

P.S. It's BUZZSAW not BUZZ, Scotty!!

Buzzsaw,

That is an excellent suggestion, but you're a day late and a dollar short. For the past several months a team of general engineering students at the University of Illinois, one of the very best engineering schools in the country, has been studying my swing. Because my single-axis swing is so simple mechanically, they were able to track it with just two sensors on my body. By contrast, a two-axis swing would take at least four.

From their work we are developing a training device that will revolutionize the way golf is taught. And, as you suggest, we'll be able to teach everyone the Ideal Mechanical Advantage swing in three months.

The next steps are to use the findings to develop a prototype followed by a product that every golfer will be able to afford, and use to learn the IMA swing. Finally a swing trainer that actually works will be available! Soon you will see the army of Moe's, not in my backyard, but on every golf course.

I don't hold it against you for not wanting to be me, but it should bring some comfort to you to know that you will be able to learn my golf swing without being me.

I assume by your comment, See ya!, that our match is still on. I have heard from a number of my students who want to back me.

Happy holidays,

The SAGE

P.S. We plan a Scigolf guest column on the University of Illinois study. Look for it in January.
