Question 77

Dear Scott,

I have been practicing hard for three weeks and I'm experiencing good success (I think). A couple questions -

First - I'm hitting my wedge, 9-iron, and 8-iron solid and longer than I'm accustomed to, but as I get to the longer clubs my ball contact and distance success gets less and less. I can't hit my driver at all. Any reasons why? What do I need to work on with the longer clubs?

Second - What do the larger grips have to do with the grip and the overall success Of the swing?

Thanks,
Al

Dear Al,

Typically in the beginning you'll find it easier to stay square to the golf ball with the short irons than with a long iron or the driver. Most traditional golf instruction has been centered around rotation of the body. This is not where the majority of the power is produced, but we,in many cases, make a conscious effort to spin our hips and our body. By spinning we break down the impact position, and release the hands whirling out and over. I suggest that you begin with the impact backwards drills with the short irons, and then use the impact backwards drills with the long irons and the driver.

With your backswing by the time that you get to the setting of the golf club parallel down the line correctly, and then raising it to shoulder-level with the arms, if you are making a mistake at the start of the down swing it will be readily apparent. You'll see and feel that you spin your body or release the golf club too soon.

The grip size is not part of the principle. It's large so that you'll have better control the golf clubs when you lay it through the palm and over the heel pad.
