Question 541

From Johnny:

I recently purchased a new set of irons for the first time in 11 years.   My previous irons were a "knock off" of King Cobras.   I bought the Mizuno MP 60's.   I'm hitting them so straight and pure, but it seems like I've lost some distance in the switch.   Aboug a club to a club and a half difference, distance wise.

Is there anything that I need to do with the club or shaft to try and get the distance back?   Someone said I could change the loft or strengthen the club?   Any ideas on what I can do, if anything?

The distance is merely a matter of length and loft.   Your older clubs may have been as much as an inch longer.   The loft could very well be 4 degrees stronger meaning that your five iron in the new set is really a six iron in your old set.  It’s more important for you to have a "good" distance that you can trust with each club in your bag than hitting as far as you can.  I for one wouldn’t mess around with the length and the balance of your clubs but just calibrate the new yardage.   If your ego gets in the way then just think in terms of degrees on the clubhead instead of the number on the clubhead.  Your old seven iron was in actuality probably a strong six iron.
