Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf was a weekly television series that aired from 1962 through 1970. This video is a golf match between Jimmy Demaret and Sam Snead played at the Eisenhower Golf Course on the US Air Force Base in Colorado and originally aired on February 26, 1966. This was a classic rematch between two of golf’s biggest names during the thirties, forties, and fifties. Jimmy Demaret was the first golfer to win three Masters titles. He also had 12 PGA Tour victories and played on 4 Ryder Cup Teams. He was quite a character and had enormous charm. Sam Snead has 81 PGA Tour titles. His quick wit and down-home personality made him one of golf’s most beloved champions. In a PGA Tour career that spanned four decades, he won three Masters titles, three PGA Championships and the 1946 British Open.

This video is a golf match between Chi Chi Rodriguez, Gay Brewer and Arnold Palmer, played at The El Conquistador Golf Club in Puerto Rico and originally aired on January 11, 1969. Chi Chi Rodriquez, a native of Puerto Rico, is still one of the most beloved players. A winner of 8 PGA Tour events, he represented Puerto Rico in 12 World Cup competitions and is still successful on the Senior PGA Tour. Gay Brewer, the gentle Texan, got an early start by winning the 1949 United States Junior Championship. After making his way onto the PGA Tour in 1956, he went on to win 11 PGA Tour titles, including the 1967 Masters. Arnold Palmer generated “Armies” of fans in the mid-fifties with his bold reckless golf style. He has 61 PGA Tour victories and seven Major championships. He represented the US on six Ryder Cup Teams and six World Cup Teams.

This video is a golf match between Peter Alliss and Tony Lema, played at The Mid-Ocean Golf Club in Bermuda and was originally aired on January 14, 1967. Peter Alliss was an accomplished amateur golfer in England before making his way into the professional ranks. As a professional, he became known as one of the game’s fiercest match players, appearing on 8 Ryder Cup Teams form 1953-1969. “Champagne” Tony Lema received his nickname after treating the media to the beverage upon capturing his first tournament. Lema burst onto the golf scene in 1957 and quickly established himself as a force on the PGA Tour. In his all-to-short career, he won 11 PGA Tour titles and the 1964 British Open.

This video is a golf match between Julius Boros, Lee Trevino and Frank Beard played at Club de Golf high above Mexico City and originally aired on February 7, 1970. Julius Boros was one of golf’s most beloved characters during the fifties and sixties. A holder of 18 PGA Tour victories, Boros also won two US Open titles. Lee Trevino burst onto the PGA Tour in 1968 after finishing fifth at the 1967 US Open a virtual “unknown”. He went on to capture two US Open titles, two British Opens, two PGA Championships, 27 PGA Tour titles and continues to find success on the Senior Tour. Frank Beard was yet another Texan to make a mark on the PGA Tour. He won 11 PGA Tour events and played on two Ryder Cup Teams.
