Mike Souchak was a college football star at Duke University before making his way onto the PGA Tour, where he made an immediate impact. Julius Boros was one of golf’s most beloved characters during the fifties and sixties. He is the holder of 18 PGA Tour victories and has won two U.S. Open Titles. He is the oldest golfer to win a major championship, capturing the 1968 PGA Championship at the age of 48. Sam Snead finessed his way to 81 PGA Tour titles. His quick wit and down home personality made him one of golf’s most beloved champions. In a PGA Tour career that spanned four decades, he walked off with three Masters titles, three PGA Championships and the 1946 British Open.

This video is a match between Gary Player and Peter Thompson played at Royal Melbourne, in Australia and originally aired on February 18, 1962. Royal Melbourne is considered one of the best golf tests in the world. Gary Player, a native of South Africa, has traveled the world perhaps more than any other golfer. Gary joined the PGA Tour in 1957 and has won 21 PGA Tour victories; three Masters, three British Opens, two PGA Championships and the 1965 U.S. Open. He continues to be a force on the Senior PGA Tour today. Peter Thompson, one of the world’s best respected players, gained worldwide recognition during the fifties when he won the British Open five times and finished second twice. He holds the Senior PGA Tour record for the most victories in one year, winning nine times in 1985.

He represented the U.S. on six Ryder Cup Teams and six World Cup Teams. Doug Sanders backed up his fun-loving, colorful demeanor with a strong game that won him 19 PGA Tour victories including the Canadian Open which he won as an amateur. Frank Beard was yet another Texan to make a mark on the PGA Tour. He won 11 PGA Tour events and played on two Ryder Cup Teams.

This video is a match between Byron Nelson and Gerry De Wit, played at Haagsche Golf Club, better known as “The Hague”, in The Netherlands. Haagsche Golf Club is perched on the Dutch coastline and is reminiscent of British courses. Byron Nelson had 18 victories in a single year, including 11 in a row, in 1945, a record no one else has matched. In his career he had 52 PGA Tour victories including two Masters titles, two PGA Championships and one U.S. Open. Gerry De Wit is perhaps the greatest golfer to ever come out of Holland. A frequent competitor in the British Open, De Wit won the Dutch Professional 14 times and represented The Netherlands in 10 world cups.
