Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf was a weekly television series that aired from 1962 through 1970. This video is a golf match between Gay Brewer and Billy Casper, played at the Doral “Blue Monster” in Florida and was originally aired on March 2, 1968. Gay Brewer, the gentle Texan, got his start in golf early, winning the 1949 United States Junior Championship. After making his way onto the PGA Tour in 1956, he silently went on to win 11 PGA Tour titles, including the 1967 Masters. Billy Casper, one of the game’s most consistent players, reached prominence in 1958 when he won four PGA Tour events. The next year he won the first of two U.S. Opens and went on to win 51 PGA Tour victories. He represented the U.S. on a record of nine Ryder Cup Teams.

This video is a golf match between Doug Sanders and Peter Alliss, played at Penina Golf Club, in Portugal and aired on February 17, 1968. The Sanders/Alliss match was significant, because the two had met as opponents in the previous year’s Ryder Cup Match. The Penina Golf Club in Portugal was designed by Henry Cotton. He took a former rice paddy and created a layout of enduring design with water on 13 of the 18 holes. His large signature greens allow for a variety of pin placements. Peter Alliss, son of British great Percy Alliss, was an accomplished amateur golfer in England before making his way into the professional ranks. As a professional, he became known as one of the game’s fiercest match players, appearing on 8 Ryder Cup Teams from 1953 to 1969. Colorful is the only way to describe Doug Sanders. A product of the state of Georgia, Sanders backed up his fun-loving demeanor with a strong game that amassed 19 PGA Tour victories. His first, the Canadian Open, he won as an amateur.

This video is a golf match between Chen Ching-Po and Tony Lema played at Kawana Golf Club, in Japan and aired in February 23, 1964, just months before Lema’s victory in the British Open. The Fuji Course is one of the two courses at the Kawana Hotel & Golf Club. The championship layout is part of a Japanese pine forest and features elevated trees and tricky diagonal bunkering, making it a strong test for a golfer of any caliber. Chen Ching-Po is one of the greatest golfers to come out of the Republic of China. Though small in stature, Ching-Po won numerous titles around the world and represented his country in 11 World Cup Matches. “Champagne” Tony Lema received his nickname after treating the media to the beverage upon capturing his first tournament. Lema burst onto the golf scene in 1957 and quickly established himself as a force on the PGA Tour. In his all too short career, he won 11 PGA Tour titles and the 1964 British Open.

This video is a golf match between Dave Stockton, Tom Weiskopf and Roberto DeVicenzo, played at Rangelagh Golf Club, in Argentina and aired on January 17, 1970. The Rangelagh Golf Club is located in Buenos Aires. The 6,800 yard, par 73 layout doglegs through a forest. Dave Stockton won 11 PGA Tour events, including 2 PGA Championships in a career that spanned 27 years. Stockton also played on two Ryder Cup Teams and two World Cup Teams, and is currently on the Senior PGA Tour. Tom Weiskopf brought his sweet swing onto the PGA Tour in 1965 and won 15 events over the next 17 years. He currently divides his time between golf architecture and playing on the Senior PGA Tour. Roberto DeVicenzo is Argentina’s gift to the golfing world. He has won 4 PGA Tour events and the 1967 British Open, and represented Argentina in the World Cup a record 17 times.

This video is a golf match between Bob Goalby and Bob Charles, played at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club in New Zealand and aired March 24, 1963. The Goalby/Charles match was played in cold, blustery weather. The Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club is a British style links course that sits on the southwest cast of New Zealand’s North Island. The course features narrow fairways loaded with pot bunkers and boasts small lightning-fast greens. This challenging layout rewards the good shot, but punishes the bad. Bob Goalby is best known for his victory in the 1968 Masters after Roberto DeVincenzo signed a wrong scorecard. Goalby won 11 PGA Tour events, played on the 1963 Ryder Cup Team and was one of the founding members of the current Senior PGA Tour. The most successful left-handed golfer of all time, Bob Charles has thrilled galleries for thirty years. From winning the 1954 New Zealand Open as an 18 year old amateur, Charles went on to win five PGA Tour events and is still a major force on the Senior PGA Tour.
