Golf Fitness Q & A

From Simon:

I am currently looking, as a coaching point of view, into the different types of feedback that can be given to a pupil.   Could you please provide some inormation on this, and contrast how you would effectively provide feedback to a beginner, and a scratch handicap golfer?

Simon,

As a coach, you probably provide instructional feedback in a number of different ways.  Video provides visual feedback.  The sound of the ball strike provides auditory feedback.  You then request kinaesthetic feedback from your pupils ... how did that feel? ... was it comfortable or uncomfortable? ... etc.

Matching physical ability with technical ability uses the same feedback principles.  Video is an excellent tool to identify areas where physical restriction is causing a swing flaw.  Physical discomfort experienced by a pupil during a "swing change" is another way to ascertain if there are physical restrictions.

Most beginners are unconsciously incompetent during execution of a golf swing.  Most scratch golfers are consciously competent.  A beginner will usually have very poor body awareness during a golf swing.  An expert golfer will usually have very good body awareness during a golf swing.  As a coach, I would suggest you ascertain the level of body awareness of each pupil and then provide appropriate feedback matched to their learning preference (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, etc.).

Cheers,

David

"The golf swing is a great combination of power and athletic precision."
Butch Harmon - Coach to Tiger Woods & Greg Norman

Golf is a sport and golfers are athletes. You need strong and flexible muscles to generate power and clubhead speed. You need stamina and endurance to maintain focus for 18 holes. You need good posture to achieve a proper ball address position and prevent injury.

To produce a good golf swing, these physical characteristics of posture, balance, flexibility, strength, power, timing and endurance must all work together in harmony. Of course, natural golf skill and technique are also important. But to get maximum results from your swing, and take full advantage of lessons and equipment, your body must be conditioned to meet the specific physical requirements of the game of golf.

Training for specific golf improvement is an exact science. That's why David developed Golf Fitness Matters( - the complete golf, health and fitness training program. It is designed to help you (and your body) play better golf in just 8 short weeks!

Your body is truly the most important piece of golf equipment you have. You'll be amazed at your golf improvement once you get started on this amazing program. So what are you waiting for? Start treating your body like it's the only one you'll ever have!
