Let the Player Play!

It's a strange fact about golfers but once the game has got us hooked we find it hard not to read, talk and theorize about the game. We'll do this with other people but we also often do this in our own heads. We think about the game, how it should be played, how we play it, how we'd like to play it, what our faults are and what we should do to fix them. If you fall into this group then you are, in the nicest sense, a "split" personality. Inside your head you have TWO golfers. There is Joe (Jean) Soap the player and Joe (Jean) Soap the coach. You must learn to keep these two persona in their correct places.

On the range and practice greens let the coach train you. Work specifically on things that he\she has been told or read about according to the methodology that suits your game. At practice, let the coach ... er, well .... coach! Out on the golf course is NO PLACE for the coach. You cannot go and play confidently and successfully if your head is full of theory and mechanics. When you are out on the course leave the coach persona at home in bed. Let the player play!! As time goes by successful practice and playing regimens actually merge these two 'beings'. You will discover that what the coach persona tells you to do on the range becomes automatic for the player out on the course.

Remember the places for your 'split' personality and that golf is played on a golf course - let the player play!
