Q and A
Some news about ScottScott is still in Vancouver working to get Parmasters launched. Tough task! All outdoor sports are down, and golf may be leading the way. The economy is one reason for the decline, the other is generational. The members of the generation who used to get into outdoor sports are now warming couches. The economy will recover, the question is will the couch potatoes get off their duffs? What to do? Scott and I have a plan. The August Scigolf newsletter featured an article on how we learn skills. Whether it's learning to play an instrument or golf or another skill they all involve a similar process. This process is explained in the The Talent Code. The Talent CodeHow do we reach our potential in sports, music, or games like chess? Those who have do the same thing. "They tap into a neurological mechanism in which certain patterns of targeted practice build skill. Without realizing it, they have entered a zone of accelerated learning, while it can't quite be bottled, can be accessed by those who know how. In short they've cracked the talent code." Daniel Coyle explains how they do it in The Talent Code. All our skills are created by neurons firing through nerve fibers to synapses. These circuits are the "programs" we use to perform skills like playing the piano or swinging a golf club. There is a newly discovered brain mechanism that we can use to improve our talent. Myelin is that mechanism. Myelin is an insulator that grows around our nerve circuits, the more we use the circuit the more layers of myelin. Increased layers of myelin improve the circuit by reducing interference from adjacent circuits. This in turn increases the band width for the desired skill. The more layers of myelin, the better the skill. The keys to building myelin are The Talent Code is worth reading, well-written and an eye opener on how to grow your talent by tapping into this newly discovered brain mechanism. Your library should have a copy. Scott Hazledine was well ahead of the curve. Scott teaches Deep Practice in his Master the Golf Swing DVD. This DVD is a 45 minute masterpiece. An example of Deep Practice is this from the The Talent Code. A young girl is learning to play the clarinet. The piece she is practicing is a difficult Woody Herman solo that has her interest. She plays until she hears a mistake, stops. listens to Woody Herman, looks at the sheet music. Then she plays that part again and repeats this process until she gets it, and then goes on. Her music teacher says she learns 10 times faster using Deep Practice. A golf analogy would be having a specific practice goal and building to a full swing instead of banging away at range balls, hoping for the best. Scott breaks the golf swing into 5 Impact Backwards exercises in his Master the Golf Swing DVD. Each of the Impact Backwards exercises is easy to learn, at least compared to the full swing. When one exercise is learned you go onto to the next building to the full swing. Because the ball travels a short distance you can do these exercises in your back yard, garage or basement. All you need is some range balls, a mat or rug and maybe a small net. If you make a mistake you'll see it allowing you to be your own coach. Figure out what went wrong and correct it. Deep Practice will get you to your goal 10 times faster. Your next step is Scott's How to Master the Golf Swing. In this DVD Scott teaches the golf swing using the Golf Kata and Golf Chi. These are slow motion martial art learning techniques. Scott teaches the key positions of the golf swing by breaking the swing into a sequence of slow motion exercises. Using a weighted golf club provides immediate feed back. Scott does his best to Ignite you and he is a Master Coach. Success will keep up your motivation. Here is a comment from a customer who has Scott's DVDs and who is physician. How about the third step -- Master Coaching? Scott is available for instruction. What do YOU GET with Scott?
You'll receive the most significant and in-depth 2 and 3 day golf schools ever comprised. Scott will teach you personally. NEVER AGAIN will you have to experience going to a golf school and getting an underling teaching you. Scott believes you shouldn't go to a golf school of a big name instructor, and have that big name instructor only make a brief pseudo appearance then hand you off to an assistant. That doesn't happen with Scott. Send me an Ask Scott to make arrangements.
