Q and A
Different Kinds of Sand in the BunkersFrom Rick: I really like your technique for bunker shots but I have a question concerning different types of sand. I don't have a problem when the sand is somewhat "fluffy" and has some depth to it. My problem arises when the sand is firmer and really has no depth. The club seems to kind of just want to bounce off the harder sand. My question is two-fold. 1. Is there any setup/technique adjustments I need to make in the firmer sand? SRH: Make sure that you keep your nose over the knee and left knee inside of the foot. This will keep the the club on a shallower bottom. Also remember thaqt the ball will come out more from firm sand, so you need less swing. 2. Should my club selection change in firmer sand - for example, use a wedge with more or less bounce? SRH No, but what you can do is pull in your left arm to the side as you swing through for more spin. I'm Reaching for the Ball! From Darren: I find that in order for me to keep the shaft of my club running up my right arm correctly, I am reaching way out for the ball. The result is a really vicious slice off the toe of the club. Darren, it looks as if you are exaggerating the straight line approach. In order for Straight-Line accuracy you need to have the shaft in line with the bottom bone of your right forearm not your entire arm. Having said that I still want great extension through impact of the right arm and that is accomplished by the weight transfer, the spine angle and the head position. This is why I advocate the setting of the bottom of the arc with the left arm resting on top of the chest and allowing yourself to reach down and underneath to put your right hand on the golf club in the single-axis fashion. If you do this you won’t be reaching out too far for the ball. You’ll use your spine tilt to measure yourself to the golf ball. Take another look at my setup: my nose is over my right knee, my upper body is balanced back to the right and my lower body is neutral. My left arm is extended and on top of my chest. My right elbow is inside ny right hip. All I need to do now is turn and left, and I am on plane and the correct distance away from the golf ball.
Are there some general guidelines as to how far your nose should be from the ball with all the clubs in the bag, or am I missing something basic when address the ball? If you allow both arms to rest on your chest then it’s simply spine tilt forward that puts you in the correct position. Also, how do you learn tempo? I consider myself a fairly intellegent guy and know that a fluid, balanced swing is a very important key to success, but when I swing it looks like I am tring to kill a snake. How can I teach myself good tempo? Any advise? Counting, it’s as simple as that. If you are a fast tempo guy then your back swing should just be one, two. If you’re a slow tempo guy in your back swing then it should be one, two, three. Just make sure that if you’re doing the counting to get to the top of your swing, and if you’re doing 1 - 2 - 3 make sure 3 is at the top of your swing. The counting promotes the downswing. Count on the way back up and then simply released the hands so the golf club squares through. Cheers, Scott From Shawn: I am interested in the 3 position trainer. Do we order that through you? I would ask that you order from me, just give me a call at 800-663-2331.  : I will include with your order the video portion and a definition for the club how to use in the three magic moves. Here is a video clip of me demonstrating the trainer. I noticed on their website there were multiple weights and grips. I was wondering if we ordered it through you do you use the velvet grip, the dvd with you about the swing trainer, and the proper 2.5 lbs weight? Yes, order through me and I will provide all that for you. Scott
