The Story of SimpleSwing

SimpleSwing

Haven’t you always thought golf was harder to learn than it should be?

I know I always did. I knew the traditional golf swing was complex, but it just seemed that learning the golf swing was harder than any other equally complex sports skills. I decided to try to do something about that.

Fortunately, I had taken many courses in anatomy, physiology, and the mechanics of body movement. In my teaching and coaching career I had spent years simplifying the teaching and learning many other sports skills so I just assumed I could do it for the golf swing as well. Little did I realize I was starting out on a 10 year quest. Whenever I was at a range or a course I found it fascinating to observe golf professionals teaching their students. Overall I was very surprised at the lack of effectiveness of golf professionals of that era.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s I made a pretty thorough scientific study of the golf swing. I read all the scientific literature on it and I read everything the experts of the day had to say. I also studied the history of the golf swing and how it had changed over the years.

In the mid 1990’s with my children growing I began to have a bit more time for golf. As I got more serious about golf I saw an article in Golf Digest about Natural Golf. It seemed to promise a simpler way to swing a golf club. Jumping in with both feet I decided to become a Natural Golf Certified Instructor. However, it was obvious after the first day of my instructor’s training that this wasn’t going to be what I had hoped. At the end of the first day of certified instructor training everyone in the class felt lost. Natural Golf had a lot of promise but for me it just wasn’t the easy to learn golf swing that I was looking for. It had some good elements in it but I felt the package just wasn’t put together right.

I then a decade of testing and experimentation. I continued to read all the scientific literature and well as the literature of the growing “alternative golf swing” movement. Over the next years I experimented every facet of the golf swing. Nothing was sacred. I experimented with stance, grips, planes, timing, postures and everything else I could think of. Having a background in Karate I even mixed in some martial arts concepts.

Now, I was specifically going back through my previous research trying to put together the simplest stance, grip, address position, etc. Some things worked well together others didn’t. I worked on simplifying the golf swing down to it basic elements.

In 2002 things started coming together. I found a colleague with interests similar to mine who could help me with the testing and I found an eager test subject. Eventually both of these folks would become partners in Simple Golf LLC.

In simplifying the golf swing we started by simplifying the movement of the lower body. Our testing had shown that extraneous lower body movement was the root of many swing problems. From our experiences with other sports we knew that reducing the movement of the lower body would make a much more stable base for the golf swing. We borrowed some of the lower body movement from a home run hitter in baseball. The PowerSet stance with the brace of the front leg proved to be very powerful.

Next we attacked the grip. I think I have have played golf using every way humanly possible to grip the golf club. I tried to play at least a full round with each grip trying to see the strengths and weaknesses of each grip. We learned a lot of things not to do. Eventually, we found that the traditional teaching that the hands must be opposing (facing each other) was not necessarily true. That lead to the development of the amazingly powerful PowerThumb grip.

The final part of the SimpleSwing to come together was the starting of the downswing. Since we didn’t have much lower body movement we couldn’t do anything like Nicklaus’s planting of the front heel. It turned out that starting the downswing with the shoulders was the simplest, most repeatable, most powerful method we ever tested.

At that point everyone in our group thought we had something special. Everyone who learned the SimpleSwing suddenly began hitting the ball farther, more accurately and more consistently than he ever dreamed possible. Still we needed to do some testing so we advertised for test subjects in the Orlando, FL area, offering free golf lessons. We offered free lessons to get as many students as quickly as possible into our testing program. The majority of our students were mid to high handicappers or beginners but we also attracted a number of low handicappers.

In the first week of testing it became clear that SimpleSwing was working amazingly well. Every student in the first lesson made more progress than we ever expected. The low and mid handicappers picked the swing up in about 30-45 minutes. Even beginners who had never swung a club made great progress in one lesson. We suddenly realized we might be able to really help bring new golfers into the game.

What is SimpleSwing?

SimpleSwing is an amazing new easy-to-learn golf swing. It has been engineered from the ground up to be the simplest possible golf swing. It is a extremely efficient golf swing. Because of SimpleSwing's improved efficiency and effectiveness golfers are getting more distance, more accuracy and more consistency than possible with any previous golf swing.

SimpleSwing uses the very stable PowerSet stance that reduces lower body motion and mistakes.

SimpleSwing’s PowerThumb grip allows you to keep the club head square to the swingplane throughout the backswing and downswing. This means that you don't need to rotate the club face to square it up at impact because it's already square. We start the downswing with the shoulders which makes SimpleSwing very repeatable and very powerful.
